The Black Dog has stood on this lane since the fifteenth century, raised from the same creamy limestone that Chilmark’s quarries sent to build Salisbury Cathedral. The cathedral got the spire; we got the fireplace. History will judge who chose better.
Step inside and it’s all still here — the great inglenook with its original bread and salt ovens, blackened beams, flagstone and timber floors, and fires that have barely been allowed to go out since Agincourt.
In 2025 the village lit the fires again. The Black Dog is officially an Asset of Community Value — which is government language for “this place matters to people” — and we intend to keep it that way: proper pints, honest food, no fuss.
